Things to Consider Before Adopting a New Pet
The Animal Protection Society of Orange County (APS) encourages you to adopt one of our wonderful dogs and cats carefully selected from local animal shelters and other sources. We choose animals based on temperament and make every effort to match them with adopters based on compatibility. Before adopting one of our animals, please think carefully about the responsibility you are taking on. You and APS together are giving your new pet a second chance, and we want the match between you to last a lifetime. We’ll also be here for you once you take your new pet home.
When you first visit our animals at the APS Adoption Center , you’ll see they are very happy to be with us, but they are eager to find new homes. Many of them have had difficult experiences and are not yet fully recovered. They’re halfway there, and with your love and support, they’ll make it all the way.
· Have you discussed getting a new pet with all members of your household? We strongly encourage families to come to the adoption center together. We do not adopt out pets as gifts.
· If you have other pets at home, will they get along with your new pet? If you’re not sure, please bring them to the adoption center and we’ll help facilitate introductions.
· Other pets at home must also be current on all their vaccinations. These will help protect your new and old pets against any illness.
· Do you have supplies for your new pet? Can you make a financial commitment to a new pet for the next 10-20 years? Have you thought about how your new pet may affect your lifestyle? If your lifestyle changes, what will you do with your pet? Are you willing to make an emotional commitment to a new pet? Will the pet be a member of your family?
· Please do not select a pet for the way he/she looks or for a particular breed. Choose a pet based on his/her temperament and unique personality. We’ll help you determine compatibility with your family.
· Consider whether you and your household have the time to train a new pet, especially if you’re adopting a dog. A well-trained dog is easier to control and can fit more easily into your family. APS has an excellent dog training program to help you and your new pet establish good training habits.
· Be sure to select a pet that fits your schedule and exercise regime. Dogs require more time than cats.
· Consider adopting an older pet. Some older dogs and cats are more suitable for young children. They may be housebroken, calmer in the household, and already have some training.
· Are you aware of your local animal control laws? Some counties have strict leash laws and require licenses for dogs and cats.
· Is anyone in your household allergic to animals? If so, how will you handle this?
· If you make the decision to adopt, now is the time to choose a veterinarian if you do not have one. You will need to schedule a visit for your new pet within fourteen days of adoption for a routine physical.
Thank you for adopting your new pet from APS. We look forward to our continued partnership with you.
